This may seem like a rather silly question – for those who have not experienced anxiety AND for those who live with it constantly.
My Joy with Anxiety
As many of you know, I suffered anxiety, panic attacks and OCD from a young child until I was 23. For many of those years a lot of people around me had no idea what I was going through internally. Each moment of my day was riddled with anxiety and fear, often for no apparent reason. Even in times of joy (yes, I did still experience joy) the fear and anxiety was still there. I look at it like joy was a surface experience while deep down existed a foundation of fear, anxiety and worry. All the time I was having a good time I was also feeling anxious and scared on some level.
My Sadness without Anxiety
I have not experienced any anxiety for the last 20 years and what has been the most amazing thing is that I can experience sadness, anger and grief but underneath it all, maintain my foundation of contentment, love and security. I have recently had a fair bit of sadness and grief in my life. I can honestly say I would rather have those emotions with an underlying foundation of contentment than I would have joy with an underlying foundation of anxiety.
Our new focus needs to be creating a solid emotional foundation.
This is why I think it is so important for us to pay attention to what creates our emotional foundation. There is so much anxiety and worry in children of all ages and the world is a very different place to when we grew up. We were not taught about our internal thoughts and how they affect our experiences. We weren’t taught about how our imagination can create physiological response as though what we fear is actually happening. We were not taught how to change our thoughts to create different experiences and different physiological responses and our children are not being taught this either. There are some basics that can make a big difference, I have seen it over and over.
The Unconscious Mind is important.
The other day I was at a school talking with some Year 5 students who were experiencing bullying. I asked them if they knew what their unconscious mind was and they had never heard of it. This is amazing to me as it is the unconscious mind that beats our heart, digests our food, grows our hair and nails, regulates chemicals in our blood as well as controlling all automatic responses in our life – tying shoelaces or sitting in a chair. Isn’t this something our kids should be learning about in school…or somewhere? Our unconscious mind runs many programs that may not be serving us. Maybe you have a program of automatically feeling anxious when you are in a social situation or your child automatically feels anxious when leaving Mum. This could be an automatic unconscious program
I have been working for a long time helping adults and children create a solid emotional foundation where anxiety, depression and worry cannot thrive. In a bid to share more information with more people, I created a 3-part webinar series you can attend for free. Do you know someone suffering anxiety or depression or who could benefit from a more solid emotional foundation? Maybe that someone is you or maybe you would like to help your children so they don’t go down the anxious path. Prevention is so much better than cure. These webinars start Tuesday April 5 at 7.30pm and will run each Tuesday for three weeks. Click here to go through to the registration page. For those who register and cannot attend a webinar there will be a replay available. Make sure you register if you are at all interested and please feel free to share this with anyone you can.
Comment below and tell me what you would most like to get out of the Webinar Series or let me know your experience of anxiety.
